How big is the GTA 6 map?
Has Rockstar released the GTA 6 map?
Is Leonida just Florida?
How many cities are in Leonida?
The State of Leonida is the fictional US state where Grand Theft Auto VI takes place. It is widely understood to be modelled on modern Florida, and it contains the returning city of Vice City. Rockstar has named and described six regions inside it — but no full map has been published.
A state, not a city
This is the most important thing to understand about the GTA 6 map, and the biggest change from earlier games.
GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas were essentially a city and its surroundings; GTA 5 was Los Santos plus Blaine County to the north. GTA 6 is framed differently from the start. Rockstar’s feature is called Only in Leonida, and the story premise puts Jason and Lucia in “a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.” The thing being put front and centre is the state, not one city.
The state is fictional, and so are its six regions. When these pages compare them with real places, that is a common reading, not something Rockstar has said.
The six regions Rockstar has described
In May 2025, alongside Trailer 2, Rockstar published a postcard-style introduction and a set of screenshots for each of six regions. The middle column is Rockstar’s description; the right-hand column is the common real-world reading.
| Region | Rockstar’s introduction | Real-world reading 🟡 | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vice City | “Everything in Excess” — “a long way from the ’80s” but still “the sun and fun capital of America” | Miami | Vice City |
| Leonida Keys | “Gateway to Paradise” — a tropical archipelago where life is easy, beside dangerous waters | Florida Keys | Leonida Keys |
| Grassrivers | “Welcome to the Wetlands” — “the untamable jewel of Leonida’s crown,” with deadlier predators than gators | The Everglades | Grassrivers |
| Port Gellhorn | A once-popular vacation spot of cheap motels and shut-down attractions, now on “a new economy” | Florida’s Gulf coast | Port Gellhorn |
| Ambrosia | “Keeping Leonida Sweet” — the heart of Leonida; the Allied Crystal refinery provides the jobs, a biker gang the rest | Florida’s inland sugar country | Ambrosia |
| Mount Kalaga | “Wild, Wild Country” — a national landmark up against the northern border, with hunting, fishing and trails | No Florida equivalent | Mount Kalaga |
Two questions the table cannot answer, because Rockstar has not said: where the borders between regions fall, and whether these six are the whole map. A region having been described does not mean the map ends there.
What the introductions say about position
Only two of the six introductions say anything about location. Mount Kalaga is “up against the state’s northern border,” and Ambrosia is “in the heart of Leonida.” Rockstar has not said where Vice City, the Keys, Port Gellhorn or Grassrivers sit within the state.
So the layout you may see sketched online — highlands in the north, farmland in the middle, coast and islands in the south — is borrowed from real Florida geography, not taken from Rockstar. The game’s map need not follow it.
Leonida and Florida: fact versus reading
Reasonably settled: Leonida is modelled on modern Florida. Subtropical climate, a long coastline, large wetlands, an island chain, a sugar industry and a neon Miami-like metropolis all line up, and Rockstar’s own premise calls it “the sunniest place in America.”
Reading, not fact: that the Leonida Keys “are” the Florida Keys, that Port Gellhorn “is” a particular Gulf-coast town, that Ambrosia “is” a specific county. These are player and press matches. They may well be right, but Rockstar has not confirmed any one-to-one correspondence, and its habit is to compress and rearrange real geography. San Andreas was not California; it was three cities and a lot of countryside arranged for play.
Two details show the relationship:
- Grassrivers plainly nods to The Everglades: River of Grass, Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s 1947 book that gave the Everglades their nickname. A tribute, not an equation.
- Mount Kalaga goes the other way. Florida’s highest natural point, Britton Hill, is about 345 feet; the real state has nothing like a mountain. Leonida is designed for play, not traced from a map.
How much of the map has actually been shown
| Official release | Date | What it added about the map |
|---|---|---|
| Trailer 1 | December 4, 2023 | Confirmed Vice City and the State of Leonida; opens with Lucia in Leonida’s penitentiary |
| Trailer 2 and Only in Leonida | May 6, 2025 | Named and described the six regions, with screenshots |
| An Extended Look | August 27, 2026 | The first long-form gameplay showing, captured on PS5 |
Three releases in, Rockstar has shown places, not a plan.
Why there is no official area
There is no official figure for the size of Leonida — no square miles, and no “X times GTA 5.”
That is normal for Rockstar. It never published an official area for GTA 5’s map either; the figures that circulate for it were measured by players, and different methods give different answers. For more on this, see how big the GTA 6 map is.
Why there is no interactive map here
Map material from unofficial sources is not reproduced or hosted here.
In mid-August 2026, material claiming to be GTA 6 gameplay and map data appeared online, and Rockstar and Take-Two issued takedown notices within hours. That material is not reproduced, described or linked here.
