Is GTA 6 Single Player? Story Mode and Offline Play
The short answer
Yes. Rockstar describes Grand Theft Auto VI as "a single player experience", and the game is built around the story of Jason and Lucia, told in chapters. PlayStation lists it as 1 player with offline play enabled. No co-op and no online mode have been announced, which does not rule out an online mode later.

Is GTA 6 a single-player game?
Yes. The pre-order announcement says it in one line: “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience.” What you buy on November 19 is a story game about Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, not an online game with a campaign attached.
What is the story mode?
The official premise, published on the edition page, sets it up: Jason and Lucia “have always known the deck is stacked against them,” and when “an easy score goes wrong” they end up “in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.”
Rockstar Support adds one structural detail. The Ultimate Edition bonuses are “threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter.” So the story is split into chapters, and Ultimate Edition items appear as you progress through it rather than all at once. How many chapters there are, and how long the story runs, has not been announced.
Can you play it offline?
PlayStation’s official game page lists offline play enabled and 1 player. That is a store label: Rockstar has not said which features, if any, need a connection.
You will still need the internet to get the game. There is no disc version, so every copy downloads in full — see does GTA 6 come on disc.
Can you play the story with friends?
Nothing announced supports it. The store listing says 1 player, and Rockstar has not mentioned co-op, split screen or shared story missions.
Does single player mean there is no online?
Not necessarily. “Single player experience” describes the game being sold; it is not a statement that online will never come. GTA 5 launched as a single-player game and GTA Online followed two weeks later. For what is known about online, see GTA 6 Online status.
