Will GTA Online Shut Down When GTA 6 Comes Out?

    Last updated:

    The short answer

No. Rockstar has not announced an end date for GTA Online on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC, and Take-Two's CEO said in August 2026 that the company expects to keep supporting it. Nothing has been announced about moving characters, GTA$ or purchases into GTA 6.

    A little more detail

Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 releases?

No shutdown has been announced for any current platform. On Take-Two's August 7, 2026 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick said the company expects to continue to support GTA Online going forward. The only time the service has closed was on PS3 and Xbox 360 in December 2021, with six months of notice.

Will my GTA Online character transfer to GTA 6?

Rockstar has not announced any transfer of characters, GTA$, vehicles, properties or progress from GTA Online into GTA 6. GTA 6 itself is sold as a single-player experience, and no GTA 6 online mode has been announced.

Do Shark Cards or GTA+ carry over to GTA 6?

Nothing official says they do. Shark Cards add GTA$ to GTA Online, and the GTA+ benefits Rockstar lists are GTA Online benefits. Rockstar has not described any GTA+ content inside GTA 6.

Background and full explanationFurther context and details

    Is GTA Online shutting down?

No shutdown has been announced. GTA Online is running on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and Rockstar has not given an end date for any of them.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two’s pre-order announcement describes it as a single-player experience, and no GTA 6 online mode has been announced. Until that changes, GTA Online is the only online GTA there is. Our GTA 6 Online page tracks that separate question.

What Take-Two has said on the record

Rockstar itself has not published a post-launch plan for GTA Online. The clearest statements come from Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, answering analysts on earnings calls.

    DateWhereWhat Zelnick said
February 3, 2026Q3 fiscal 2026 earnings call“I have every reason to believe we’ll continue to support GTA Online. There’s a great community that loves it, that stays engaged.”
August 7, 2026Q1 fiscal 2027 earnings call“The cadence hasn’t really changed, and we do apply significant resources to that, and we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward.”

The February answer came with a caveat. Zelnick opened it by saying that Rockstar decides where its titles go and that Take-Two keeps “a pretty light touch” on its labels’ creative plans. These are a parent company’s expectations, not a Rockstar roadmap. Neither answer says how long support will last or what future updates will contain.

On the August call, Take-Two also noted that Rockstar had released the Kortz Center Heist for GTA Online on July 14, 2026, four months before GTA 6.

The one time GTA Online did shut down

GTA Online has closed on a platform once. On June 16, 2021, Rockstar announced that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions would shut down on December 16, 2021.

    • Players got six months of notice.
    • Shark Card sales on those two consoles stopped on September 15, 2021, three months before the servers closed.
    • Rockstar said the change had “no impact on access to, or progress within, the Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode.”
    • The PS4, Xbox One and PC versions kept running and kept receiving updates.

That shutdown came eight years after those versions launched, and after two newer console generations had arrived. It shows how Rockstar handled a closure once. It is not a schedule for PS4 or Xbox One.

Will characters, money or progress transfer to GTA 6?

Rockstar has not announced any transfer from GTA Online into GTA 6. That covers characters, GTA$, vehicles, properties, rank and purchased items.

Rockstar has moved GTA Online profiles before, but only between versions of GTA Online itself:

    • PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S (2022): characters, GTA$, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing and player-created jobs could be migrated.
    • GTAV Legacy to GTAV Enhanced on PC (2025): a one-time migration of the same kind. Our Enhanced vs Legacy guide explains the rules.

Both were moves inside the same game. Neither tells us what happens between two different games, so we would not grind or spend in GTA Online today on the assumption that it carries forward.

    Shark Cards and GTA+

Shark Cards add GTA$ to a GTA Online account. Rockstar has not said that GTA$ bought or earned in GTA Online can be used anywhere else.

Digital copies of GTA 6 bought before November 20, 2026 include one month of GTA+. The benefits Rockstar’s editions page lists for that membership are GTA Online benefits, such as a monthly GTA$500,000 deposit. Rockstar has not described any GTA+ content inside GTA 6. The redemption deadlines are in our pre-order guide.

What this means if you play GTA Online now

    • Keep playing if you enjoy it. There is no announced end date, and Take-Two expects support to continue.
    • Buy Shark Cards for what they give you in GTA Online today, not as a head start in GTA 6.
    • If you are still on PS4 or Xbox One and plan to buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for GTA 6, your GTA Online profile can move to the new console within the same family.
    • For how the two games compare, see GTA 6 vs GTA 5.
