GTA 5 Enhanced vs Legacy: Which Version to Play in 2026

The short answer

• On PC: you do not have to choose at checkout. Buying GTA 5 gives you both GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy. Play Enhanced if your PC meets its minimum requirements, and Legacy if it does not.
• On console: the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions get the current feature upgrades. The PS4 and Xbox One versions are still sold but do not.
• Before GTA 6: GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and no PC version has been announced. Nothing in GTA 5 has been announced as carrying over.

What Enhanced and Legacy are

Until March 2025 there was one PC version of GTA 5. On March 4, 2025, Rockstar released a free upgrade that brought the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S features to PC. The upgraded version is called GTAV Enhanced. The original PC version was renamed GTAV Legacy and stayed available.

Rockstar kept Legacy so that, in its words, “anyone whose hardware does not currently meet the minimum requirements of the new upgrade can keep playing.”

Both versions contain the full Story Mode. The differences are in graphics, loading, and the GTA Online extras that were previously console-only.

Is the upgrade free?

Yes. Rockstar made Enhanced free for everyone who already owned GTA 5 on PC, and new buyers get both versions in one purchase. On October 10, 2026, the Rockstar Games Launcher listed GTA 5 at $29.99 in the United States; check your own store for the current price.

Rockstar’s upgrade announcement lists the recommended specifications for Enhanced. Check them against your PC before you install, because Enhanced asks for more than Legacy does.

Moving your save from Legacy to Enhanced

Rockstar’s migration rules are strict, so read them before you start.

Story Mode

• Upload your save from the pause menu inside GTAV Legacy, then download it in GTAV Enhanced.
• You can re-upload as often as you like before migrating, and each upload overwrites the last.
• You can migrate to Enhanced once.
• You can keep playing your Legacy save afterwards, but Enhanced progress cannot be copied back.

GTA Online

• The transfer is a one-time migration started from within GTAV Enhanced.
• It includes characters, GTA$, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing and player-created jobs.
• It does not delete your Legacy progress, but it cannot be reversed.
• PC profiles cannot be migrated to or from PlayStation or Xbox.

Can Enhanced and Legacy players play together?

No. Rockstar runs Legacy’s GTA Online as a separate instance. In its words, “PC Players who want to play with each other will need to ensure they’re playing the same version of the game.” Decide with your friends before anyone migrates.

Console versions

GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S came out on March 15, 2022, with graphics modes up to 4K and 60 frames per second, HDR, ray tracing and faster loading. GTA Online is also sold on those consoles as a standalone game, and Story Mode can be added to it later.

Rockstar’s site states that the latest feature upgrades are available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and the upgraded PC version only. PS4 and Xbox One players can make a one-time migration of Story Mode and GTA Online progress to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Is GTA 5 worth buying before GTA 6?

This is our view, not Rockstar’s.

• If you have never played a GTA story: yes. Story Mode is a complete game on its own, and our games to play before GTA 6 guide puts it first. Read the GTA 5 story recap instead if you only want the plot.
• If you only have a PC: GTA 5 is the newest GTA you can play there. See GTA 6 on PC for what has and has not been said about a port.
