How Much Did GTA 6 Cost to Make? Budget and Pre-Orders

    Last updated:

    The short answer

Nobody outside Take-Two knows. The company has never disclosed the development budget; CEO Strauss Zelnick says only that "it was expensive", and the $1 billion-plus figures are analyst estimates. Pre-order numbers are not public either: Zelnick calls them "unprecedented and astonishing" but gives no count. Take-Two expects $8.0 to $8.2 billion in net bookings this fiscal year.

Background and full explanationFurther context and details

How much did GTA 6 cost to make?

The budget has never been disclosed. Asked in May 2026, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told Business Insider only that “it was expensive.”

Take-Two’s filings do not answer it either. The quarterly report gives one total for capitalized software development costs across every game and label the company publishes, not a figure for any single title.

Where do the $1 billion and $2 billion figures come from?

Not from Take-Two. The same Business Insider article reports that several unnamed industry analysts put the cost “likely in the $1 billion to $1.5 billion range.” That is an outside estimate. The bigger $2 billion figure that circulates online has no primary source at all.

How many pre-orders has GTA 6 sold?

That has not been disclosed. Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, and the quarterly report says only that “pre-orders for the title commenced in June 2026.”

On the August 7 earnings call, Zelnick gave a description but no number, as reported by Variety: “the level of preorders is unprecedented and astonishing,” adding that “they are so unprecedented that we just don’t know how it’ll translate into sales.” Pre-orders are not sales yet; they can still be cancelled before release.

    What does Take-Two expect?

In its first-quarter results on August 7, Take-Two kept its outlook for fiscal 2027 (April 2026 to March 2027) at $8.0 to $8.2 billion in net bookings, citing “excitement around the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI.” That covers the whole company, not GTA 6 alone, and Take-Two has not published a sales target for the game.

How well did earlier GTA games sell?

    Series or gameUnits sold-in
Grand Theft Auto seriesOver 470 million
    Grand Theft Auto V (2013)Over 230 million

Figures are from Take-Two’s quarterly report as of June 30, 2026. “Sold-in” means units shipped to retailers and digital storefronts, which is not the same as copies bought by players. At launch in 2013, Take-Two reported more than $800 million in GTA 5 retail sales on the first day. For how the two games compare, see GTA 6 vs GTA 5.

Can you buy GTA 6 stock?

There is no GTA 6 or Rockstar stock. Rockstar Games is a wholly owned part of Take-Two Interactive, which trades on the Nasdaq as TTWO. This page reports what the company has said; it is not investment advice.
